Silicene
Background
Silicene is a two-dimensional material consisting of a single layer of silicon atoms. It was first synthesized in 2012 by depositing silicon atoms on a silver surface. Silicene is similar to graphene in that it is a planar material with a honeycomb crystal structure. However, unlike graphene, silicene is not a zero-gap material and it has a bandgap of 1.9 eV. Silicene has been shown to be a promising material for applications in electronics and optoelectronics.
Some of the emerging trends in Silicene include the use of Silicene for solar cells, flexible electronics, and water filtration.
